Anointing Witchcraft And Wicca Ritual Tools
Being a pagan blacksmith and wandsmith, I am often asked how to anoint or sanctify new witchcraft tools for use in ritual magick, wicca and witchcraft. Especially when folks are buying their first athame or ritual magick wand from me for use on their witches altar and in their spell crafting and ritual magick practice!
It’s a great witchy question!
The infamous witch, Aleister Crowley, went as far as to say that you should make ALL your witchcraft tools for ceremonial magick! Even going as far as collecting your own iron ore, to smelt into iron, and then forging your own blade, and carving your own handle… THAT’S A LOT!!! And frankly I doubt Crowley did either!!! But… He was kinda right, because as in all things witchcraft and wicca… ITS ALL ABOUT INTENT! The more you put into a ritual weapon and witchcraft tool, then the more you will get out of it… The more you build a “magickal link” in your mind between the tool and its purpose then the more power that will be lent unto your spellcasting and spellcraft!
Therefore, if you have neither the time, skills, knowledge or tools to forge iron in to a ritual witchcraft dagger or ceremonial magick sword… Then the next thing is buying one from a pagan blacksmith from a specialist witchcraft supply store like Artes And Craft!
Then at least the tool has been made by a skilled blacksmith and practitioner of pagan magick INTENTIONALLY for use in ritual magick!
All of the major pagan magickal elemental witchcraft tools should be consecrated:
So how to go about anointing and sanctifying!?!?
Sanctity is from the Latin – To make holy!
Therefore, making an object holy and embodying it with power, casts a spell in your own mind that the tool has become YOURS and is an object of POWER!
There are many traditional ways… The following are some of my favorite and preferred methods of sanctifying ritual magick tools for use in spell crafting and ritual magick…
BANISHING, CLEANSING AND ANOINTING!
This is an important step if you did not make the ritual witchcraft tool from scratch yourself! Maybe you were gifted a deck of tarot cards, or someone gave you your first magick wand, or you found your first athame at a flea market…
You might want to remove the energy from the previous owner or maker…
Not always though, for example, if I forged the witches athame you purchased, and I specifically forged it with intent, charging it with each hammer blow to be a creature and witchcraft tool of power to the future owner… Then you might still want that energy in the athame and so choose to NOT cleanse and banish… But if you found your athame at Goodwill or a flea Market, and do not know its history, then I WOULD cleanse it.
Earth is great for banishing and resetting tools. Plunging your blade into the earth is a great way of banishing old energy. An old Grimoire I am very fond of, The Little Consecrate Book Of Black Venus, specifically calls for witchcraft tools to be used in ritual magick to be wrapped in a GREEN CLOTH (green is the color of earth AND Venus) and then to bury it for three days and nights (the power of three should be noted here).
I have done this with tools… Although I take care as metal tarnishes and books and wood can be ruined by the damp… And it would not do to use something like plastic to protect them. I find somewhere where the earth is dry… Under decking, or an old board, or in a crawl space… Somewhere where the earth is very dry.
Another good way is with a banishing incense. I am sure you are aware of smudging with sage or censing with incense. Incense and the concept of “holy smoke” is as old as mankind. Frankincense was used by the Egyptians, Romans and greeks and others and was associated with the Sun, and therefore the powers of light.
Famous old school banishing herbs such as Fumitory, Hyssop, Agrimony can be used.
Our award winning Luna Ignis brand of fine resin incense uses ALL of these classic ingredients with three types of Frankincense, sage, fumitory, agrimony, hyssop and more. Burning the incense and running the tool through the smoke is a great way to cleanse and sanctify.
STATEMENT OF INTENT!
Words are magick and INTENTION is everything… One of the most important, but often forgotten steps, in ritual ceremonial magick and spellcasting is the “Statement Of Intent”… Boldly and loudly proclaim your intention as you cense/smudge your tools. For example I will say something like…
“I, I, I! Anointed and initiated witch! By my power and right and magick rite do anoint this athame to be MY ritual weapon and tool. BE this blade in my hand a creature of power, of control, anointed to banish that which I will to be banished, to destroy that which I will to be destroyed. Tool of the element of air! Symbol of my cunning, knowledge and will, sigil of desire! By the power of fire and air be this ritual dagger clean of all previous energy! By my will it now becomes my ritual weapon, an extension of my power and will by my authority as witch!”. So mote it be and so it is.”
Anointing oils are very good for the same purpose… Just smear a suitable witchcraft anointing oil on the tool… For example, a WATER anointing oil on a chalice and a FIRE oil on a wand and so on. Again stating your intent as before.
The only drawback with oils is that they can damage certain items, so be careful with books and journals… But, they can also be protective! Oil can stop blades rusting and tarnishing and protect wooden handles from sweat.
There are famous anointing oils from old school Grimoires such as Abramelin Oil which are great for ceremonial magick ritual tools!
Obviously using the tool further builds a bond and “the magickal link” so get busy and use it! Tarot cards for example can traditionally be left under your pillow where you sleep for three nights (similar to the burying operation described above). This can also be done with your other ritual weapons.
A more traditional witchcraft method is the letting of blood… A blood payment is a sacrifice… And forms a powerful bond with your new witchcraft tool! Blood is the water of life, freely given as payment for a boon is a powerful spell! Using a burin or the tip of your athame, prick a thumb or finger and spread some on the ritual tool! (again be careful with books or journals!). Using menstrual “Moon Blood” is very powerful too!
