Maat (Ma'at) is a goddess who is also the personification of ancient Egyptian law, truth, order, and justice. As the goddess, Maat maintains the balance between seasons, stars, and the actions of mortals; she brings order to chaos and is the counterpart of the Egyptian concept of injustice, "Isfet." Ancient Egyptians believe that the universe is cyclical and that the battle between order and disorder is on a repeating cycle. Injustice, or chaos, comes from the troubles of the people, and it is up to the pharaoh to overcome these difficulties and achieve the "Maat," therefore Egyptian pharaohs are often depicted with the emblems of Maat to emphasize their role in restoring order and righteousness to the world.
