Sobek is the ancient god of crocodiles, often depicted as a crocodile, a mummified crocodile, or a man with the head of a crocodile. As the god of the Nile River, Sobek also brough fertility to the land of Egypt. It is likely that in the beginning, Egyptians worship Sobek as a fearsome deity with some dark qualities, however, his strength and protection were valued greatly when used in defense of the Pharaoh and the Egyptian people. Mummified crocodiles and crocodile eggs were often found with the deceased in order to enlist the protection of Sobek in the afterlife.
