Hermes was the son of Zeus and the nymph Maia, the daughter of the Titan Atlas. Hermes is the messenger of the gods in Greek mythology, and he is able to travel quickly between the worlds of gods and men aided by his winged sandals. He is the protector of shepherds, travelers, thieves, merchants, and the conductor of souls to the Underworld. The winged helmet that Hermes wore is called the Helm of Hades, or the cap of invisibility, and it has the power to turn its wearer invisible. The helm was crafted by the Cyclopes and gifted to Hades when Zeus released them from Tartarus. The helmet was used by many gods and demigods to aid their personal quest, including Athena and Perseus.
