This athame, perfect for traditional witchcraft, ceremonial high magick and wicca was forged from a single piece of iron bar. 13.5 inches in total length, of which the blade is 6 inches.
Paul forged the pommel out into pagan and witchcraft shapes and symbols! This one is a Stang - A symbol of the Horned God!
The colorization is created by Tempering the blade. This is a heating process which hardens the blade so it will take an edge. The crazy iridescent colors are a patina that forms and tell you how hard the blade is from gold, the hardest through pinks, powder blues reds, purples and so on. Most blacksmiths temper the blade before sharpening and polishing – which removes the patina. Paul experimented with first sharpening and polishing to keep the gorgeous colors. Paul did some research and apparently this was known back in history…. Old school knights would have their armorers temper their suits of armor and go into battle with their armor blinged out in colors! The patina is quite robust and will endure, it will fade slowly over time, but can be restored by putting the athame back in an oven with a temperature over 440 degrees for an hour or two!
Unique hand forged heirloom quality athame by our pagan blacksmith. Paul is a practitioner of traditional witchcraft and ceremonial magick.
Iron is sacred to Mars.
In Ceremonial magick and some witchcraft traditions the dagger or athame represents the element of air and therefore used to control, banish, or destroy.
In some Wicca traditions the athame represents the element of fire and is perfect for a weapon of manifestation and circle casting.
The Tubal Cain mythos also has iron as a tool of our will and apostasy, Yahweh after the expulsion from Eden told Adam and Eve they would have to scrabble among the thorns for their food... But Tubal Cain, 7th son of Cain had other ideas and discovered the working of iron and became the first blacksmith. To the Tubal Cain currents of witchcraft iron is therefore a tool of our will.
In Traditional English cottage witchcraft the Fae Folk are scared of iron and therefore iron tools can be used to protect against or control the Fae.
Each of Paul's athames are unique. There is no plan beforehand, the athame is allowed to manifest as it wills, Paul just helps it along. The twists in the handle and the contrast between the light shiny detailed areas talk to thew movement of energy and the dual nature of magick – the light and the dark.
