The Book of Shadows is a part of the Neopagan religion of Wicca, and has become a part of many other pagan practices. The most famous Book of Shadows was created by Gerald Gardner, a pioneering Wiccan, in the late 1940s or early 1950s. They have since become popular in other forms of traditional witchcraft and folk magick.
