How To Lucid Dream For Witchcraft Part 2 – Attaining Lucidity - the DILD method
This is part two of Paul's series on Lucid Dreaming for pagans and witches... Paul learned to master all forms of astral projection and lucid dreaming many years ago and experimented with this remarkable magikal state extensively LONG before he ever dreamed of opening a witchcraft ritual supplies store online! ... He also teaches and lectures these lucid dreaming techniques for witchcraft at his witchcraft supplies store... Bullshit free and methods that work! Our wicca and witchcraft store online also has many books that Paul approves of!

Everything is the food of dreams……. (Tibetan dream yoga wisdom)
There are some simple daily practices that will get you lucid within a month. This article should get you to the point where you have your first willed lucid dream. Some of you will have almost immediate success (within days), most of you will take a little longer but see success within 30 days, sadly for a few it will take much longer.
A DILD (Dream Induced Lucid Dream) is where you realize within a dream that you are dreaming, you become lucid and aware inside the dream. The dream then “changes” as your higher mind wakes up enough to take control. Most people find upon becoming Lucid that they are suddenly hit by a wave of wonder and excitement. The dream also becomes more vivid and intense. It’s like being within a TV program then somebody suddenly turns the color and contrast on the TV up to 10.
Realizing you are in a dream is harder than it sounds. When we sleep the higher functions of our mind are shut down some or all of the way. Annoyingly, this includes the logical and reasoning part of our minds. This is why in a dream if a fish fly’s up to you and starts talking, you just accept it. Even if you think something is “odd” or “wrong” then your mind will just create an excuse, such as you remember reading in the newspaper previously about a mutant genetic engineered flying fish that escaped from a local lab.
The trick for witches, pagans and wiccans is therefore is to train our minds to recognize certain “triggers” or “dream signs” in our dreams that we can use to question whether we are in a dream or awake. By training a special part of our memory function, and habitually building into our daily lives something called “reality checks”, we can prove to ourselves we are dreaming within a dream.
I review each of the preparation activities below. Dedicate a little time each day (really very little) and you will soon be having your first short lucids.
Your first Lucids will be very brief. There are some “naturals” out there that will pick up the skill very quickly and will enjoy long and intense lucids. Others will find that their first experiences are all too short – but so amazing that they desperately want more.
First lucids are short as one must master “dream control”. First time lucid dreamers get so excited that their hearts start to race and they wake up. Others try a skill like flying and take to the air like superman, and overload on the wonder and joy and wake up. Others lose lucidity – it’s very easy to slip back into a normal dream where the subconscious takes back over the control of the dream. Dream control, in-dream skills, staying lucid longer, are all topics for a later article.
THE DREAM JOURNAL
Witches keep journals right? Books Of Shadows! Journaling your dreams is a must! If you dont then please see our huge selection of books of shadows and journals for witchcraft on our pagan store online!
Research into Lucid Dreaming suggests that you need to be able to remember at least 2 dreams per night in good detail to be successful.
The easiest way to achieve this is by keeping a dream journal. As good occultists we should recording dreams in our journals anyway. If not then I recommend you start.
Keeping a dream journal is a way of programming ourselves to accept that dreaming is VERY IMPORTANT.
Let’s remind ourselves of a few facts. Every sleep cycle of 90 minutes concludes with a period of REM sleep – and the time spent in REM sleep increases in the later cycles. Therefore we dream for about 2.5 hours or so per 8 hours of sleep. We also normally wake up after every sleep cycle directly after REM. We rarely remember these brief waking moments, as we just roll over and go back to sleep.
This is when memory of the previous dream is usually “erased”. Unless the dream was exceptionally exciting, scary, emotional or erotic then the brain treats the dream as “junk” and memory of it is lost.
We must train ourselves that these dream memories ARE important. The best way to do this is:
Normally after 2 weeks of keeping a dream journal you will find you are remembering 4-5 dreams a night in amazing detail. You will find your dreams are becoming more vivid and real. In reality your dreams are always real and vivid – it’s the untrained hazy memory of them that makes them seem disjointed and “dream like”. Once your mind has accepted that dreams are important, and that it’s really critical to remember them, then they will just seem more vivid, real and lengthy. Some Tips:
DREAM SIGNS
As per the Tibetan quote at the top of the article – everything in the wake world surfaces in dreams. Work, friends, social events, vacations, anything really.
However, many people find they dream of the same places or things frequently. Some even have standard dream characters or reoccurring dreams. Some people find they always dream about the events of today a few days later.
One of my key dream signs is “England”. I grew up in England and lived there until I was in my late twenties. Many of my dreams take place back in the UK. I can use this as a “trigger” – that if I am in the UK then I am almost certainly dreaming and should perform a “reality check”. More of this next.
Dream signs are a useful tool to achieve lucidity – but not essential.
After a few weeks of keeping your journal, then look back through it. Read every dream. Look for reoccurring themes, people, places, objects, etc. Make a note of these, underline them, make a list of them.
Don’t be concerned if you can’t find anything specific. Many people’s dream signs are as general as:
I’m at home. I’m at work. I’m in my car. I’m walking my dog.
You just want to find one or more dream signs that crop up frequently enough for you to work with.
REALITY CHECKS
A reality check is one of the keys methods for proving to our sleeping selves that we are actually dreaming.
Simply put – it’s trying to do something that would be IMPOSSIBLE in the wake world.
The idea is that if you can do something impossible then you MUST BE DREAMING.
Here are some common reality checks:
As you are looking at your hands, trying to fly etc, you need to be asking yourself over and over “Is this real or is this a dream, I really think it is, I’m dreaming!!, I’m dreaming!!!!, I’m in a dream!!!!”. Do this with excitement. Look around you – look at details and textures while you keep thinking about if this is real or all a dream. REALLY BELIEVE THAT YOU COULD BE DREAMING!!!
Here’s the thing: If you repeat reality checks frequently enough then they will become a habit and sooner or later this will carry over into a dream, you will realize in dream that you might be dreaming, you will perform a reality check which will fail, and you will find yourself lucid.
Reality checks are important and a real key to lucidity IF YOU DO THEM OFTEN ENOUGH EVERY DAY TO BECOME A HABIT.
Research has shown that it takes about 2 weeks for us to develop habits. Therefore use affirmations every day. Also place reminders on your desk or around the house to remind you to perform them. After two weeks they should be a habit and you will find you’re doing them automatically.
Also, perform them whenever you run into one of your dream signs in the wake world. Therefore if you often dream about work – then do reality checks at work.
Most ideally also do them when ever anything odd or out of the ordinary happens. The sense of “oddness” we sometimes find in dreams is a gateway to lucidity. If we train ourselves to reality check whenever anything even slightly out of the ordinary happens in the wake world then this will carry over into your dreams.
THE PROSPECTIVE MEMORY
This is the most key and fundamental weapon to attaining lucidity. It’s vital – and brings all of the above together and makes it WORK.
Your prospective memory is what you use when, for example, you are out and you decide that you need to do something urgent or important as soon as you get home. Maybe you are out with a friend and they tell you that another old friend wants you to get in touch. You might not want to rush home – instead you “make a mental note” to call them as soon as you get home. You then forget all about it – until you get home – and then your “mental note” triggers.
Like any function of memory it can be trained. One of the best ways to do this is to combine it with dream signs and reality checks.
By now you should have your list of dream signs and preferred reality checks.
Every morning use the following affirmation:
This is VERY IMPORTANT! It’s really important that today WHENEVER I see (whatever your dream sign is) then I MUST do a Reality Check”
The important thing is to believe it really is important – really focus on making it important. The words in caps should be emphasized.
Keep a note in your dream journal your “score” – how many checks you did during the day.
After a week expand the practice. Add two or three dream signs to the affirmation.
You can use this without dream signs also. Try training your prospective memory to do a reality check whenever you get a coffee, or every time you open your front door, or let the dog out. Change it up to keep it fresh.
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER – YOUR FIRST DILD
OK, you’re probably 3-4 weeks into dream journaling and reality checking.
You are writing down dreams in enough detail every night that it’s maybe becoming a pain in the arse.
You have got pretty good at training your prospective memory and you are performing reality checks multiple times per day.
Now start using your finely honed Prospective Memory with the following KEY affirmation before bed – or if you wake for a while during the night:-
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. I WILL REALIZE I AM DREAMING AND BECOME AWARE I AM IN A DREAM. WHENEVER I SEE (your dream sign) AS I DREAM I WILL PERFORM A REALITY CHECK AND I WILL BECOME AWARE.
You can of course change this up to suit. The key is again to make it feel REALLY important. I normally visualize the words as I stress them. Repeat it over and over for a few minutes before you go to sleep or if you wake up in the middle of the night.
Then, one night soon, you will hit a dream sign and perform your reality check by habit and this will fail, you will know you are lucid, everything will become hyper vivid. You will be able to fly, go anywhere your imagination is capable of rendering, summon people you want to fuck/fight/meet, perform magick, explore the Tunnels Of Set, anything goes......
May your dreams be deliciously dark and intense……
