How To Lucid Dream For Witchcraft Part 4 – PHILTRUS AND SUPPLEMENTS
Here is part four of Paul's series on Lucid Dreaming for pagans and witches... Paul is a master of all forms of astral projection and lucid dreaming many years ago and experimented with this remarkable magikal state extensively LONG before he ever dreamed of opening a witchcraft ritual supplies store online! ... He also teaches and lectures these lucid dreaming techniques for witchcraft at his witchcraft supplies store... Bullshit free and methods that work! Our wicca and witchcraft store online also has many books that Paul approves of and classic dreaming witchcraft herbs such as mugwort and wormwood.

In this article we will explore both traditional natural and man-made oneirogens. An oneirogen is an agent that will increase the frequency, length and vividness of your dreams. This is important for witchcraft, not just lucid dreaming, as many witches would like to enjoy vivid dreams for prophecy and divination work!
These agents are like training wheels for any witch, they will increase your chances of achieving lucid dreams. BUT they are not a short cut or easy option. If you do not practice the techniques in my earlier articles then these agents by themselves do not guarantee Lucid Dreams or Out Of Body Experiences.
DISCLAIMER….. Please check carefully before taking ANY of the agents discussed in this article. Some of the man-made supplements have proven negative interactions with some medications or some medical/mental conditions. Likewise some of the traditional agents listed below can be dangerous or poisonous in large doses. Your health is your responsibility – please do your own research before trying any of the below, experiment with small doses and first consult your health care professional if you are taking medications or have a medical condition. The author and our witchcraft supplies store online can accept no responsibility for your health or experimentation with these agents.
None of the below man-made supplements are illegal. Many are available at large pharmacies, most can be found at any specialist supplement/vitamin stores, all are available on Amazon.
The traditional and natural agents are also fully legal and can be purchased from occult stores such as our own Alchemy Arts in Chicago or on-line shaman stores if you are outside the valley of Chicago.
First lets remind ourselves of a little science as it’s important to take these agents at the right time .......

SCIENCE CLASS
We sleep in 90 minute cycles (average - varies a little from person to person). When we go to sleep the night’s first few cycles are mostly spent in deep sleep(NREM), where our bodies rest and recuperate. Dreaming is rare during these deep sleep periods. At the end of each sleep cycle we enter REM sleep - which is when we dream. As the night progresses the later cycles include less deep sleep and more REM sleep. You may have noticed how you tend to dream a great deal if you get a long lazy “sleep in” on weekends or holidays. The last few cycles of the night are almost all REM sleep.
Although there are still many theories as to why we dream - or why it’s important - scientists have learned enough about brain chemistry to know a little of what’s going on in our heads as we sleep - and we can use this knowledge to improve our dreaming experience.
When we fall asleep at night our brains release a chemical called Serotonin - and this seems to trigger deep sleep. After about 4.5 hours or 3 sleep cycles our brains start releasing a chemical called Acetylcholine - and this seems to cause more REM sleep. Dopamine, Preperpherine and Noradrenaline also play a role and seem to affect the mood and vividness of our dreams. Sadly these chemicals cannot be taken directly as they do not cross what is called the “Blood Brain Barrier”. To load up on these chemicals we have to take amino acid “precursors” that the brain does absorb and uses to create the desired chemicals.
Some vitamins - especially the B types help with dream recall and clarity.
There are supplements we can take before bed that boost the amount of serotonin the brain produces. This causes REM sleep to be suppressed in the first half of the night leading to what is known as REM Rebound - where the later sleep cycles are loaded with quality REM sleep.
Other supplements are taken just BEFORE we enter this REM rich period of sleep that BOOST choline levels. It is necessary to set your alarm to wake yourself after 4.5 hours of sleep to take them - but the rewards are worth it. Therefore practicing the Wake Back To Bed methods discussed in my earlier articles with supplements give the best results.
Some supplements can also cause tolerance issues, in that frequent usage limits their effectiveness. Therefore they should not be taken every night. Leave at least a 48-72 hour gap between attempts.
PRE BED SUPPLEMENTS TO SUPRESS REM FOR A LATER REBOUND
DANGER – Do NOT take any of the below if you suffer from Depression or are taking Anti-Depressants.
1) Melatonin - inexpensive and sold in most supermarkets/grocers. It is sold as a sleep aid. As it increases serotonin levels in your brain it causes you to fall asleep after about 20 minutes. It will suppress REM sleep for the first 4-5 hours of sleep so causing the REM Rebound affect in the 2nd half of the night.
2) L-Tryptophan. An amino acid that occurs naturally in white meat such as Turkey. It’s the reason you full asleep after pigging out on turkey during the holidays. It is also a precursor to Serotonin, Melatonin is a little more efficient and therefore preferred, but I have had much success with L-Tryptophan.
3) 5-HTP. Also a serotonin precursor. This is one of my favorites. I find it also creates very vivid dreams
SUPPLEMENTS TO BE TAKEN AFTER 4-5 HOURS OF SLEEP
1) Alpha GPC. The main Acetylcholine precursor. Wonderful stuff!Greatly elongates periods of REM sleep and raises consciousness close to waking levels therefore allowing the ideal state for Lucid work and OOBEs. Take too much though and you will not get back to sleep. It is also a smart drug (Nootropic). Choline is known to be important for memory function and clear thinking. Research has shown that people suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia have low or nonexistent levels of Choline. Some people take Alpha GPC to ensure they keep their marbles after 40-50 years old.
2) Galantamine. This is a neuro-inhibitor rather than a precursor. It stops the brain from flushing out choline. Therefore it is taken with Alpha GPC. It’s like running a faucet with the plug in - Alpha GPC being the water from the faucet and Galantamine being the plug. Your brain “floods” with Acetylcholine. It will keep you awake if you take too much. It’s an expensive supplement - about $50 a bottle. It’s also used in the fight against Alzheimer’s. This is one supplement that loses its effectiveness if you use it too often. The general advice is to only use it every 48 hours or more. Not a bad thing as it is expensive.
3) Huperzine A - works in exactly the same way as Galantamine. It’s made from a Chinese moss. It’s still relatively new on the scene but seems to act in the same way. The good news is that its way cheaper BUT it’s so new that we don’t know about any tolerance issues as yet.
4)N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine. This is one of my favorites. If ever I am going through a dry spell and not dreaming much then this is the big guns. It gets converted into epinephrine and dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is linked to making dreams more action packed - if you like adrenaline packed action thriller type dreams then boosting Dopamine levels is good. It also contains a huge dose of B6. Can be taken before bed also.
5) L-Theanine. This amino acid is sold as a natural and mild way to reduce anxiety. It is useful in helping you get back to sleep if you have taken Alpha GPC and Galantamine. It can also give you nice fluffy dreams. So if you prefer chick flick type dreams to action/thrillers then this is the supplement for you.
6) Nicotine Patches. Pick up a box of nicotine patches at the store and read the instructions - you will see warnings that they cause VIVID dreams when worn at night. From Wikipedia… “Nicotine immediately stimulates the release of many chemical messengers including acetylcholine, norepinephrine, epinephrine, vasopressin, arginine, dopamine, autocrine agents, and beta-endorphin”. Nicotine patches rock!! You will dream your nuts off!
SUPPLEMENTS TO BOOST VIVDNESS AND RECALL
1) Niacin(B3) - used in the production of serotonin.
2) Pantothenic Acis (B5) - aids recall of dreams and vividness - also helps Choline production
3) B6 – helps the conversion of serotonin precursors into serotonin in the brain.
4) DMAE – another nootropic that helps concentration and memory recall - I find I remember my dreams way better when I take a few of these.

FROM THE WITCHES GARDEN – TRADITIONAL AGENTS
1) Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) – As its Latin name suggests, it is sacred to Artemis and the Moon. Is a hugely popular witchcraft herb! Makes a pleasant tea that can be drunk before bed. Some find it works well if the leaves are put in a muslin bag which is then placed inside your pillow. I personally find that Mugwort increases the vividness and oddness of dreams. Excellent for use in moon based rituals.
2) Wormwood – (Artemisia absinthium). Also sacred to Artemis AND a principle ingredient in Absinthe. Be warned though that wormwood is one of the bitterest herbs known to man – it is truly disgusting to drink. I buy a liquid concentrate and mix it with A LOT of wine or fruit juice. A good oneirogen though, and again useful in moon based ritual.
3) Mandrake (Mandragora officinarum) – A much respected and storied esoteric herb. A member of the Tropane Alkaloid family that includes Deadly Nightshade, Datura, Belladonna/Henbane. All the Tropane Alkaloid family is very poisonous and dangerous, wildly hallucinogenic and can induce delirium and even death. Mandrake is the safest and mildest member of the family. Only a tiny quantity of crushed dried root is needed to act as an oneirogen – no more than a quarter of a teaspoon or less! Mandrake inspired dreams can be very dark, full of sinister deeds.
All the above traditonal agents can also be used in incense, offering bowls, mixed in moon based oil, etc in a pagan or witchcraft ritual.
Potions are also effective using the above ingredients. The potion should be consecrated and then imbibed during a ceremonial invocation of the moon. Before the ritual I take some white wine in my chalice, mix in some ground and dried mugwort, a little wormwood and ground mandrake, then during ritual add nine drops of blood and any “elixir” collected from sex magick.
