Cornish Adventures in Paganism and Witchcraft Blog Part 3 - The Neolithic Standing Stones High above Modron in Penwith!
Long before we opened our Witchcraft Supplies online store and our pagan supplies store in Hartford Michigan, we used to love visiting old England and Europe! This blog records our adventures around Beltane 2016, three months before our Witchcraft Store was born!
In this blog we explore a wonderful Neolithic complex on the high Penwith pagan moors above the village of Modron! The village was named after the Celtic pagan Goddess Madron and our hike ends at Madron’s Holy Well. Where pagans, wiccans and witches to this day tie ribbons and kewpie dolls to the trees around the well! But we start on the high moors… First visiting the famous holed stone, Men-an-Tol, then up to my favorite stone circle, my astral temple, my eidolon… My spiritual home… The Nine Maidens Stone Circle. Then onto the iconic Lanyon Quoit (a ruined pagan burial tomb) then finishing at Madron’s well.
It’s a long hike! All up hill! But Cornwall is so gorgeous that it’s impossible to complain!
First stop is the evocative and famous Men-An-Tol… The holed stone. Carved by hand by pagans 1000s of years ago, it is believed to be the entrance to a burial mound that has long ago eroded and been dug away. Only the holed entrance stone and a few pillars / standing stones remain. The current configuration was most certainly created by antiquarians… Local folklore says that passing three times through the holed stone will cure diseases such as Ricketts. Here is Pat trying to get the cure!
Some also say you have to walk around and weave between the standing stones as well as going through the hole!
You then continue to hike 2 miles up hill onto the high mores, passing old farms and other neolithic pagan menhirs and standing stones… Some of which show paganism through time… One at this farm was erected by the Neolithic people and then was later carved with runes by the Saxons and so became a rune stone.
At the summit is a tor, a rocky outcrop, at its base are the remains of hut circles where the pagans lived.
Due west of the tor is the remains of either a stone circle or burial tomb… Its not even on the map, but its obvious if you know what you are looking for….
Further on you come to the wonderful lonely Nine Maidens stone circle… So called because only nine of the stones remain.. But its my favorite place in the world. I have got skyclad here and worked many a witchcraft ceremonial magick ritual and pagan spell casting. I took this picture at sunrise on midsummer morn before the days of digital photography…
Here it is by day, being loved by my witchy wife!
Did I mention it’s my happy place! My pagan temple?!?!?!
Down the hill, below the ruined Victorian Ding Dong Tin Mine is the wonderful Lanyon Quoit. It was originally a chambered burial mound. Only the huge capstone and supporting standing stones remain. Ding Dong Mine in the background.
I think Pat loved the earth power and pagan goodness of Lanyon Quoit even more than the Nine Maidens!
Then finally down to Madron’s Well… Where clear fresh spring water pours from the hillside. A holy place since pagan times and named after a Celtic pagan goddess… Of course the Christians built a chapel there, thankfully now ruined. We didn’t bother with pictures of the Christian crap… But here is the Holy Well! It’s now a place of pagan and witchcraft pilgrimage. It was wonderful to see all the ribbons and spells, Brigid corn dollies and kewpie dolls tied to the trees around the spring!
