June 2026: The Shortest Nights, a Vanishing Moon, and a Low Gold Full Moon

Witches, gather in. Here's the full picture of this post: we talk about the sky this month, the rituals, and a working spellbook for every Goddess I'll name.
So, June is a strange month for anyone who works with the dark, like me. The Northern Hemisphere tips toward the sun, the nights compress to their thinnest, and most of the cultural noise is about light — bonfires, beaches, weddings, the longest day. The moon, meanwhile, is doing something really interesting. Inside a single fortnight this June, she shows us both extremes: a super dark moon swallowed by the year's shortest nights, and a full moon that rides low and gold across the southern horizon.
If you keep company with a dark goddess — whichever Goddess has your name in Her mouth — this month is built for you.
The Solstice Sets the Geometry
Everything pivots on Sunday, June 21, 2026, the June solstice. The sun arcs higher than at any other point in the year, which forces the full moon, sitting opposite, to take the lowest path of any full moon in 2026. The new moon, riding alongside the sun, leaves whatever brief darkness exists completely unlit.
Two opposite gifts for us moon witches.
The Dark Moon — Sunday, June 14
The new moon arrives June 14, 2026, at 10:54 p.m. Eastern Time (02:54 GMT, June 15), and it isn't an ordinary one.
It's a Super New Moon — the moon hits perigee, her closest point to Earth, almost in sync with the new phase. You won't see her; that's the point. But the tides will swell into king tides, and the gravitational pull on the body and the water table is real and measurable. If you're sensitive, you'll likely feel it before you read about it.
More importantly, this dark moon falls inside the darkest, shortest window of the entire summer. True astronomical darkness is brief in mid-June at northern latitudes, but for the nights of June 11–17, what little darkness exists is completely moonless. The Milky Way's galactic core rises in the southeast around midnight. If you do any kind of scrying, shadow work, ancestor offering, or threshold practice, you won't get a cleaner window until autumn.
The Strawberry Moon — Monday, June 29
The full moon lands June 29, 2026, at 7:56 p.m. Eastern Time.
This is the Strawberry Moon — Algonquin, Ojibwe, and Lakota in origin, named for ripening wild strawberries. Europe called her the Mead Moon, the Honey Moon, the Rose Moon. My strawberries in the garden ripen at this time too, so I'll be celebrating in the kitchen as well as at the altar.
Three things matter about this particular one:
- She rides low. Mirroring the high solstice sun, this full moon traces the lowest arc of any full moon in 2026, skimming the southern horizon all night.
- She's a Micro Moon. Sitting near apogee — her farthest point from Earth — she'll appear slightly smaller than average. Small, low, and gold.
- She rises in Sagittarius, near the galactic center — the same patch of sky you sat with in darkness two weeks earlier, now lit from the inside.
Step outside at sunset on June 29 and face the southeastern horizon. The moon will be most dramatic in the first thirty minutes after rising — the atmosphere will pull her toward amber and rose.
Your Challenge: Do the Work
Here's the part I actually care about.
Pick one of these two nights — the dark moon on June 14 or the full moon on June 29 — and do a ritual for the goddess you actually work with. Not the one that's trending. Not the one with the prettiest altar on Instagram. The one whose name you already know in your own mouth.
Hekate at the crossroads with a plate of eggs and wine (my own Goddess and offering). There's Lilith with red thread and a mirror. The Morrígan with crow feathers and whiskey. Kali with fire. Nyx with nothing but the dark itself. Inanna with the seven gates. Cerridwen with the cauldron. Persephone with pomegranate seeds at the threshold between the seen and the unseen. You know She wants the relationship, so I challenge you (us) to bring it.
- Dark moon work on June 14: lean into what's hidden. Divination, banishment, ancestor offerings, the things you don't say out loud.
- Full moon work on June 29: lean into revelation. What wants to be seen, named, claimed, brought up out of the dark and into the honey-light.
Either way — actually do it. Write it down afterward. The moon will not be in this exact configuration again for years.
A Working Spellbook: Nine Dark Goddesses
Since I named nine of them above, let me actually make myself useful and give you something to work from, everyone. What follows is a starting reference for each — not a replacement for the relationship, just a doorway. Every entry assumes you'll do your own deeper reading (check the Artes inventory for new titles while you’re at it 😉) and, importantly, listen for what She asks of you specifically.
⚡ Hekate
Greek/Thracian — Goddess of the Crossroads, Keys, Torches, Witchcraft, and the Restless Dead
- Domains: Liminal spaces, thresholds, witchcraft itself, necromancy, protection, sovereignty, the dark moon.
- Sacred days: The dark moon (Deipnon, the final night of the lunar cycle). August 13 (Hekate's Night).November 16 (modern Night of Hekate).
- Offerings: Eggs (especially raw), garlic, red wine, honey cakes, fish (especially red mullet), pomegranate,leek, bread baked at home.
- Sacred plants: Yew, garlic, mugwort, dandelion, oak, willow, belladonna (handle with care, Artes sells the dried herb AND seeds).
- Sacred animals: Black dog, serpent, horse, lion, toad
- Tools: Iron key, twin torches, black-handled knife, cauldron, three-faced statue.
- Colors: Black, deep red, silver/white, indigo.
- A simple working: On the dark moon, prepare a plate of food — egg, bread, a splash of wine. After sunset, walk it to a literal three-way crossroads or a threshold in your home. Set it down. Speak: "Hekate, Lady of the Crossroads, this is for you and yours. Eat, walk on, and bless what passes here." Walk away without looking back. Leave the plate overnight; return the food to the earth the next morning (if the raccoons haven’t eaten it, lol).
- What She tends to ask for first: Cleanliness at thresholds. Sweep your doorways.

🩸 Lilith
Mesopotamian / Hebrew apocrypha — First Woman, Night Hag, Mother of Demons, Goddess of Sovereignty and Refusal
- Domains: Sexual sovereignty, refusal of unjust authority, female rage, exile, the wilderness, dreams(especially uncomfortable ones), reclamation.
- Sacred days: Dark moon, especially in Scorpio or Capricorn. Any personal anniversary of an act of refusal or liberation.
- Offerings: Red wine, pomegranate, dark chocolate, blood, apples, owl feathers found (never taken), honey with chili.
- Sacred plants: Pomegranate, apple, datura, rose with thorns intact, blackthorn.
- Sacred animals: Owl (especially screech owl), serpent, lion, jackal.
- Tools: Black mirror, red cord, obsidian, a key you've earned.
- Colors: Blood red, black, deep violet.
- A simple working: Sit before a mirror by candlelight. Tie a red cord around your wrist. Speak aloud the thing you will no longer consent to. Cut the cord. Burn it. Drink the wine. The mirror is Her witness.
- What She tends to ask for first: That you stop apologizing for something specific. You'll know what.
🐦⬛ The Morrígan
Irish — The Phantom Queen, Goddess of War, Sovereignty, Prophecy, and Fate
- Domains: Battle (literal and metaphorical), sovereignty of self and land, prophecy, shapeshifting, the dead on the battlefield, ferocity in defense.
- Sacred days: Samhain (Her highest holy day), the dark moon, dawn before conflict.
- Offerings: Whiskey, dark beer, red meat (especially game), crow feathers found, blackberries, milk poured on the ground.
- Sacred plants: Blackthorn, yew, juniper, mugwort, rowan.
- Sacred animals: Crow, raven, wolf, cow (especially red or white), eel.
- Tools: Spear, sword, cauldron, a stone from your own land.
- Colors: Black, red, white — Her three-color triad.
- A simple working: Pour a measure of whiskey into a cup. Step outside at dusk. Speak the name of the battle you're fighting — internal, external, ancestral, it doesn't matter. Pour half on the ground for Her. Drink the rest (or pour it all if you don't drink). Stand there until you hear a bird.
- What She tends to ask for first: That you stop pretending the fight isn't happening and name it.
🔥 Kali Ma
Hindu — Mother of Time, Destroyer of Illusion, Devourer of the Demon-Ego
- Domains: Annihilation of ego, fierce maternal love, cutting through illusion (maya), time itself, liberation through dissolution, unflinching truth.
- Sacred days: Kali Puja (new moon of Kartik, October/November), Tuesdays, any dark moon.
- Offerings: Hibiscus flowers (red, essential), red rice, lentils, ghee, sweets, fire itself.
- Sacred plants: Hibiscus, neem, lotus.
- Sacred animals: Tiger, jackal, vulture, crow.
- Tools: Khadga (curved sword), severed-head imagery, fire bowl, mala of rudraksha or bone (remember to consider whether you are taking part in a closed tradition, see note below).
- Colors: Black, deep red.
- A simple working: Kali asks for devotional courage more than tools. Light a red or black candle, offer a hibiscus or red flower, and chant "Om Krim Kalikayai Namaha" 108 times. Bring Her one thing you want destroyed in yourself — name it aloud. Let the candle burn out fully.
- ✨A note of respect: Kali is a living Goddess in an unbroken devotional tradition. If you work with Her, learn from Hindu practitioners and teachers. Don't decontextualize Her into a generic "dark goddess." She is specifically Herself.
- What She tends to ask for first: That you stop protecting the thing that is killing you.
🌑 Nyx
Greek — Primordial Goddess of Night, Mother of Fate, Sleep, Death, and Dreams
- Domains: The Night itself (not the moon — the dark), origin, dream, fate, the womb of all things, what comes before form.
- Sacred days: Any new moon, or clear night. The longest night (winter solstice). Think about what that means this month, during the summer solstice!
- Offerings: Black wine, poppy seeds, dark honey, silence itself, incense burned in the dark.
- Sacred plants: Poppy, mugwort, datura, night-blooming jasmine, black iris.
- Sacred animals: Owl, bat, black horse.
- Tools: No tools. Or one candle, only to extinguish it.
- Colors: Pure black, deep blue-black, the violet of pre-dawn.
- A simple working: Sit in complete darkness for as long as you can stand it. No phone, no candle. Just Her. When the discomfort comes, speak: "Nyx, mother of all, I rest in you." Stay until the discomfort softens into something else.
- What She tends to ask for first: That you stop being afraid of nothing happening.
🚪 Inanna
Sumerian — Queen of Heaven and Earth, Goddess of Love, War, and the Descent
- Domains: Sovereignty, sacred sexuality, war, justice, the descent into the underworld and return, transformation through stripping away (shadow work!).
- Sacred days: Venus's appearances as Morning Star and Evening Star. The dark moon. The spring equinox (Her return).
- Offerings: Dates, beer, barley, lapis lazuli, rose, fig, honey.
- Sacred plants: Cedar, date palm, fig, rose, lily.
- Sacred animals: Lion (Her steed), owl, dove, scorpion.
- Tools: Lapis Lazuli necklace, seven symbolic items, mirror, a measuring rod.
- Colors: Lapis blue, gold, deep red.
- A simple working — the Seven Gates: Place seven small items in a line: a piece of jewelry, a garment, a token of status. Walking the line, at each item, name something you are willing to release to reach Her. Set each item down. At the seventh, stand bare-handed and speak: "Inanna, I come as I am." Sit with what's left.
- What She tends to ask for first: Honest accounting of what you've been carrying that isn't yours.
🪶 Cerridwen
Welsh — Keeper of the Cauldron of Awen (Inspiration and Rebirth), Initiator, Crone
- Domains: Inspiration (awen), poetic genius, transformation through trial, shapeshifting, the cauldron of rebirth, the long brew.
- Sacred days: Samhain, dark moons, the day you commit to your art.
- Offerings: Grain, herbs from your garden, mead, white sow imagery, things that took a long time to make.
- Sacred plants: Vervain, ivy, wheat, rowan, all herbs gathered with intent.
- Sacred animals: White sow, hen, greyhound, otter, hawk — the four forms of Her chase.
- Tools: Cauldron, wooden spoon, your own handwritten book.
- Colors: Forest green, deep brown, silver, white.
- A simple working: Brew a tea slowly — not a quick steep, a long one. As it steeps, stir clockwise and speak what you are asking to be transformed into. Drink it in three sips, naming with each sip something you are willing to be reshaped by. Pour the dregs onto the earth for Her.
- What She tends to ask for first: Patience. She brews for a year and a day for a reason.
🍎 Persephone
Greek — Kore / Queen of the Underworld, Goddess of the Threshold Between Worlds
- Domains: Initiation, the seasonal cycle of descent and return, sovereignty earned through experience,mediation between living and dead, deep grief and deep joy as the same root.
- Sacred days: Autumn equinox (Her descent), spring equinox (Her return). The dark moon. The Eleusinian dates in late September.
- Offerings: Pomegranate (always), narcissus flowers, honey, barley, mint, wine.
- Sacred plants: Pomegranate, narcissus, asphodel, mint, willow, poppy.
- Sacred animals: Bat, deer, serpent, rooster (for the dawn return).
- Tools: Pomegranate seeds, a key, a torch, a basket of flowers.
- Colors: Black and pink together, deep red, dusk-violet.
- A simple working: At dusk, place six pomegranate seeds on a small dish — the number She ate. For each seed, name a part of your descent you do not regret. Eat one yourself if you wish, or leave all six for Her. Speak: "Persephone, Queen of Both, teach me to belong to both."
- What She tends to ask for first: That you stop framing your underworld time as failure.
🪨 The Cailleach
Scottish / Irish — Old Woman of the Land, Winter Queen, Shaper of Mountains
- Domains: Winter, age, the land itself (especially stone and mountain), the long endurance, weather, the wisdom of the old, sovereignty of place.
- Sacred days: Samhain through Beltane — Her reigning season. February 1 / Imbolc, when She either turns to stone or becomes Brigid, depending on the tale.
- Offerings: Stones from your land, whiskey, oats, butter, bone, wool, anything weathered.
- Sacred plants: Heather, gorse, holly, hawthorn berry, lichen.
- Sacred animals: Deer (especially the stags She herds), wolf, raven, salmon.
- Tools: A staff or walking stick, a stone with a natural hole, wool yarn.
- Colors: Slate gray, blue-white, weathered brown, winter-shadow blue.
- A simple working: Find one stone — a real one, from outside, with weight. Hold it. Speak to it the thing in your life that needs to last, to endure, to outlive the season. Carry the stone for one full lunar cycle. Then return it to the land with thanks.
- What She tends to ask for first: That you stop rushing what is meant to be slow.
A Few Notes That Apply Across the Board
- Ask before you offer. Especially with Goddesses from living traditions (Kali, Inanna's modern devotees, the Cailleach in Gaelic-speaking communities). Listen first.
- Cleanliness is courtesy. A clean altar, a clean threshold, a clean cup. Dark Goddess work is not dirty work —it is deep work. The two are not the same.
- Don't mix pantheons in a single working unless you have a real reason. Hekate and Persephone share a myth and can be called together. Kali and the Morrígan do not need to meet on your altar tonight.
- Record everything. What you offered, when, what you noticed in the days after. Pattern is how the relationship reveals itself.
- Take it seriously, but don't take yourself too seriously. They've been doing this for a very long time. They're patient with sincere beginners. Less patient with performance.
- If you don't yet have a Goddess — don't pick one off this list like a menu. Sit. Read. Dream. She will arrive, or She already has and you haven't named it yet.
