The Arte Of Witchcraft Part 5 : Get Astral.... A blog from 40 years’ witchcraft experience…
I get inspiration for theses witchcraft blogs from all kinds of places… Sometimes conversations with customers inside our witchcraft supplies store… Or just life stuff… And often just personal experience.
Today I was sorta lazy and remembered I had a whole bunch of articles I once wrote for Aleister Crowley’s Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO) years ago… And I thought “awesome! Easy peasy! Just update them a little, add some pics… Instant blogs”… But of course nothing is ever that easy… I could not find those old occult articles anywhere… I searched an old ancient PC, old memory sticks… I am super bummed out. I’m sure they are at home at the covenstead… I had a bunch of good articles including an entire series on Astral projection and lucid dreaming! And so, being the determined witch I am, I decided to go ahead and sorta write about astral projection and lucid dreaming in traditional witchcraft and wicca anyhoo..
There will be a whole series forthcoming when I find the articles… But in the meantime let’s discuss this important and powerful practical magick witchcraft tool!
When I was nine years old a magazine was released in the UK called “The Unexplained”.. It was a weekly thing that you could collect and put into binders so they became “books”… I loved that shit… It had magick, witchcraft, ghosts, psychic powers, spontaneous human combustion, all kinds of crazy interesting stuff for a young developing witchcraft and magicians mind… In one of the very first parts was the start of a whole series on “Astral Projection and Out Of Body Experiences”. I was enthralled... “I MUST learn how to do this” I thought! Not long after I discovered the pulp horror novels of Denis Wheatley, who introduced me to Aleister Crowley and Ceremonial Magick! Often his heroes would be white magicians, fighting the baddy villainous black magicians (all loosely based on Crowley) up on the Astral Planes… And Wheatley described the same things as the magazine articles… Travelling as a spirit, or point of consciousness… Being connected to the body by a rope of light… Being able to travel through walls or great distances… Being able to see what was happening else where while being bodily elsewhere… Wow… Yes please! Perhaps too much information, but of course to an 11-year-old boy the idea of being able to fly into the bedrooms of women and watching them undress was its own motivation…
On my very first trip to dear old witchy Glastonbury, I remember to this day, hearing two witches discussing astral projection in the iconic Labyrinth Books. How one of them would leave her body at night and then fly over the Somerset Levels around Glastonbury under the light of the moon, find a hare, and then merge with it and run wild and free under mother moon. I so wanted that power….
I tried for years, learning what I could from Wheatley’s novels, the magazines and any occult knowledge I could find…
Then one day, success, sort of… I had been sick, food poisoning while camping with the Boy Scouts… I was feverish in bed at home and in-between bouts of voiding liquid from both ends of my body…. I fell asleep… And had the weirdest dream…. I actually saw myself at night on the sidewalk of the road at the back of our house… I was running and somehow observing myself running… Then I sorta “shot” out of bed and slammed into the back of myself running… And woke up with one of those big “hitting the bed after a falling dream” type of deals… Bang! I was awake… It was a strange dream within a dream, but also that I left my body and then merged with a dream version of myself… So it was a kind of Out Of Body Experience… But after that, no matter how hard I tried, I just could not get astral again.
Some years later I began a formal curriculum in Ceremonial Magick… And spent a few years working with the sphere of YESOD, the sephirot of the moon and luna influence… During this time I honed my divination skills by doing daily tarot readings and rune draws… And decided once again to finally crack astral travel..
I had a daily practice of invoking Luna Goddesses and performing daily divinations and spellcasting… I had been practicing Sigil Magick and decided to create a ritual with the intent of having an out of body experience and getting astral. SO I created a pictogram sigil based on the statement of intent of “This my will to achieve astral projection”.. I got 9 purple candles (the color and number of the moon).. I dressed and inscribed them appropriately, and burned Luna Incense, with an Artemis statue on my altar… And I found a white wine called “Luna” and poured some into my ritual chalice and added Mugwort… I then followed the ritual I wrote, invoked Luna, charged my sigil, consumed my philtron (potion) of wine and moon herbs…. And went to bed…
I dreamed… I was back in a town called Brighton where I lived when I was in my early 20s… Even though it was a dream I somehow KNEW I was dreaming as I knew I no longer lived in Brighton… I was like “huh, I must be dreaming! But how do I know im dreaming while in a dream?!?” I wonder if I can climb that lamppost???”… SO I did… And when I got to the top I wondered if I could fly. SO I took off and DID! I flew up into the night sky with wild exhilaration… As I got higher and higher I felt more bliss and joy… Until just sorta “blissed out” and woke up. “That was fucking weird!!!” I thought… And I lay in bed remembering the dream… And then suddenly an intense buzzing started at the back of my head… “This MUST be the vibrations I have always read about!!”….. Which is true.. Everything I had read said that you get intense buzzing all over the body starting at the head and this is called The Vibrations.
I waited until it spread over my whole body and I thought I might explode… And then with all my will I said, shouted, in my internal voice “I WILL TO LEAVE MY BODY NOW!”… And I DID… I can only describe a feeling of removing a glove but over the whole body, and suddenly I was looking down on myself in bed below. I have never felt such life affirming joy. In delight I said in my mind “I will to leave this room”. And I shot out sideways, through the closed window, until I was floating above our patio area 20 feet below and outside our second floor bedroom! Amazed I then started flying down the row of backyards of our neighbors down our street. Then suddenly, despairingly… SNAP! And I hit the bed with full force and sat up in wonder… And I wept… I wept for joy, and I wept for the loss of the experience… And I was determined to master this art…
I knew somehow the two experiences were connected… The odd dream within a dream where I knew I was dreaming… And the Astral Out Of Body Experience…
And I studied… And I discovered this thing called Lucid Dreaming…
And that mastering one might lead to mastery of the other.
And I was right…
And soon I could leave my body every single night I determined to do so…
How?....
