A Hecate deipnon a monthly ancient pagan Greek ritual meal and festival dedicated to the goddess Hekate and the dead, celebrated on the dark moon by witches and modern pagans. It is a ritual of devotion, purification and offering to Hecate, goddess of witchcraft, keeper of the keeps and the sacred gates!

Hekate's Supper at the Threshold of the Month

Setting:

Private room or forest clearing that has been smoke cleansed/LBRP beforehand

An altar decorated with:

Two taper candles (black), candle sticks, and four colored candles for the four elements
A bowl of water, a bowl of salt (sea salt preferred — Hekate is Einalía, "of the sea"), incense (storax or myrrh — traditional to Hekate), censer & coal, lighter, anointing oil
Athame, wand, pentagram, chalice, bell
Three skeleton keys tied with black ribbon (Hekate Kleidoukhos, "Key-Bearer")
A triple-form Hekate statue or image at center altar, flanked by the two taper candles
A large earthenware bowl or wide platter — the Deipnon plate — for the communal offering to Hekate
The Deipnon Offerings, arranged on a separate cloth beside the altar:
- Raw eggs (still in shell) — one per participant or a communal batch
- Whole garlic bulbs (peeled cloves acceptable)
- Leeks and/or onions
- Fish (sardines, anchovies, or smoked fish work well)
- Round barley cakes or crescent-shaped honey cakes (baked by a coven member beforehand)
- Honey in a small dish
- A libation of red wine (or wine with honey stirred in)
- A bundle of sweepings from each participant's home — gathered in individual cloth pouches or paper bags and brought to ritual
A communal "release vessel" — a large bowl, cauldron, or basket to receive the sweepings and written releases
Small slips of paper and pencils for participants to write what they wish to leave behind
Dark floor-length tablecloth (black)
Symbols representing Hekate: torches (LED or real), dog figurines, serpent imagery, crossroads sigil
Mugwort, yew sprigs, or garlic braids as altar decoration
Chairs set in a circle, altar in the middle

Additional materials needed:

Wine & cakes (separate from the Deipnon plate) for the Cakes and Wine ceremony
A bowl for offering to deity
A container or basket to carry all Deipnon offerings to the crossroads (or designated outdoor space)after ritual

Participants:

High Priestess (HPS): Einalia/ (of the Sea) — voice of Hekate - Water& Earth

High Priest (HP): Dadoukhos/Phosphoros (Torch-Bearer, Light Bringer), actions of Hekate - Air & Fire

Coven Member/s (CM): may perform actions of Hermes if need be

Guests (All) - chanting, call and response actions

Signals:

HPS & HP raise both arms, hands palm up, to signal call & response, "So mote it be", etc.

The Ritual:

Cleansing and Consecration:

(Smoke Cleansing of Participants starting with HPS & HP — use mugwort or storax resin if available, as these are sacred to Hekate)

CM: "How do you enter the circle?"

ALL, one by one: "In perfect love and perfect trust, and of my own free will."

(CM rings bell nine times in 3-3-3)

HP: "Welcome, everyone. We gather on this Deipnon night, the final night of the lunar month, when the moon veils her face and Hekate walks the threshold between what was and what will be. We come to honor Her — to lay down the burdens of the month behind us and make ourselves ready for the month ahead.

This evening, the new moon rests in Taurus, calling us to tend to our temples — both the physical homes we dwell in and the inner sanctuaries of body and mind. The Sun, the Moon, and Mercury stand in conjunction during this Taurus season, encouraging us to remember our own self-worth and to raise our voices — not only in our own defense, but in advocacy for those who cannot yet speak for themselves.

Pluto, the Lord of the Underworld, stationed retrograde in Aquarius on May 6th, turning the force of transformation inward — what has been buried in our depths now rises to be witnessed, and we are called to examine where we have surrendered our power and reclaim it as our own.

Uranus has freshly entered Gemini, beginning a seven-year passage that liberates the mind, sharpens our discernment, and challenges us to see truths long hidden — both within ourselves and in the world around us. Now is the time to show our gratitude and devotion to Hekate, for She is the gatekeeper of liminal spaces, the holder of the keys that unlock awakenings, and the bearer of the torch that lights the pathways of our spiritual journeys.

Land Acknowledgment:

HPS/HP/or CM: "We are gathered on the land of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, part of the Council of Three Fires. We honor their elders, both past and present, as well as future generations. In the face of violence, their presence, culture, and stewardship remain strong. We recognize our responsibility to act as good neighbors and to dismantle the systems that have tried to erase the connection between all people."

Casting Circle:

(CM does broomstick pass of the circle at least three times, widdershins, while all chant)

All: "Hekas Hekas Este Bebeloi" (repeat, visualizing a protective sphere of energy forming around the circle boundary)

HPS: "Let the salt of Earth admonish the water to bear the virtue of the Great Sea — the sea over which Hekate Einalía holds dominion." (Genuflects, mark with secret symbol of choice) "Mother, be thou adored." (Sprinkles circle round, deosil)

HP: "Let the Fire and the Air make sweet the world — may Hekate Phosphoros, Light-Bringer, kindle what is needed and burn away what is not."

Genuflects, mark with secret symbol of choice) "Dark Mother, be thou adored." (Fumigates circle round, deosil)

Calling the Quarters:

(draw pentagram with either athame, wand, or gesture)

HPS, Facing East: "Moth of the East, butterfly of the moon, element of air. Spirit of thought, inspiration, and communication, I summon you! Guide us to Her flame, remind us to seek the light in the dark. Hail and welcome."

HP, Facing South: "Hound of the South, her path companion , element of fire. Spirit of vitality, purification, and the will, I summon you! Keep us company as we walk her spiral path. Hail and welcome."

HPS, Facing West: "Serpent of the West, snake of transformation, element of water. Spirit of creativity, empathy, and sustenance, I summon you! Bestow us with the wisdom of Her magic as we create in Her honor. Hail and welcome!"

HP, Facing North: "Crow of the North, guides of the liminal, scavengers of earth. Spirit of foundation, materialization, and endurance, I summon you! Call us forth and show us her cave. Hail and welcome."

HPS, Center of Circle, drawing active above, passive below: "As above, so below, as within so without, for around us flame the pentagrams, and within us shines our star. By the powers of the Elements, the blessings of the Gods and Goddesses, and with reverence for the Old Ways, we declare this circle cast and immerse ourselves in Life Universal. So mote it be!"

All: "So mote it be!"

Invocation of Hekate:

(CM initiates chant): "Hekate — Kleidoukhos — Einalia — Phosphoros" — the coven sustains it as a drone under the invocation)

HPS (Einalia — the Voice of Hekate — leads):

"We call upon Hekate —

Nykteria, Lady of the Night,

Nyktipolos, Night-Wanderer,

Nyktophaneia, She who appears in darkness,

Chthonia, Goddess of the Earth below, protection

Einalia, Goddess of the Sea, whose portion is the deep, healing

Ourania, Heavenly one, Queen of the sky, divine

Triodítis, Queen of the Three Roads,

Kleidoukhos, Keeper of the Keys,

Krokópeplos, Saffron-Cloaked One, She of crocuses,

Apotropaia, Averter of Evil,

Kourotrophos, Nurse of All,

Pandōteira, Bestower of Everything,

We call upon you at this dark threshold of the moon. Bless and watch over this rite. Grant us your favor. Come to your supper. We have set your table.”

(HPS now embodies Hekate. She whispers a secret oath in Her voces magicae. The coven is silent.)

HP (Dadoukhos/Phosphoros — the Action of Hekate — leads):

"We call upon Hekate —

Dadoukhos, the Torch-Bearer,

Phosphoros, the Light-Bringer,

Lampadios, the Lamp-Bearer,

Phos, Holy Light in the dark of the moon,

Pyrphoros, Fire-Bearer,

Propolos, She Who Leads the Way,

HP or CM:

We call upon the fire that moves through all things —

Hermes Propylaeus, Guide at the Gate, Lord of the Threshold, Psychopompos, Shepherd of Souls — Lead us in the liminal, the path between worlds. Bear your caudaecus staff before us. Bless and watch over this rite. Grant us your favor."

(HP now embodies the Torch-Bearer. He whispers a secret oath in His voces magicae. He lights or raises the two taper candles high. HP or CM now holds the God’s presence. The coven is silent.)

(CM allows a beat of silence, then resumes for one chant softly — then stops as the Statement of Purpose begins)

Statement of Purpose:

HP (Dadoukhos — the one who declares, who acts): "The purpose of our gathering tonight is to observe Hekate's Deipnon — the Supper of the Dark Moon. We come to purify ourselves and our homes, to make offerings to Hekate and the restless dead, and to release what we no longer wish to carry into the month ahead. In the ancient way, the supper was set at the crossroads. In our way, we set it here — at the crossroads of our lives, where three roads always meet: the road behind, the road ahead, and the road within."

HPS (Einalia — she who confirms from the deep): "It is already accomplished. So mote it be!"

HP/All: "So mote it be!"

Magickal Workings:

I. The Purification — Gathering of Sweepings

(CM initiates chant: "Hekate — Kleidoukhos — Einalia — Phosphoros — Nykteria — Apotropaia — Trioditis" — this is the full, layered chant. Some voices hold "Hekate — Kleidoukhos" as a bass drone. Others add the epithets in waves. The effect should be oceanic, building.)

HPS (Einalia — she speaks for what lies beneath, what must be dredged up and surrendered): "In the old way, the household was swept clean on this night. All remnants of the month — ash from altars, stale offerings, dust from the doorstep — were gathered and given to Hekate at the crossroads, food for her and for the restless dead who walk in her train. Tonight, each of you has brought your own sweepings: the remnants of your month, your altar leavings, the things you wish to leave at Her feet."

(One by one, each participant rises and places their pouch of sweepings into the communal release vessel at the center of the circle. As they do, they may speak aloud or silently name what they are releasing. The chant continues throughout — the CM keeps it alive.)

II. The Writing of Releases

(HPS/CM distributes slips of paper and pencils)

HPS: "Write what you do not wish to carry forward. A debt — emotional or otherwise. A fear. A habit. A name. Fold it and place it in the vessel."

(Participants write in silence. Soft drumming or a low drone may accompany this. Each folds their paper and adds it to the vessel.)

III. Tarot / Oracle Pull

HP (Dadoukhos — the Light-Bringer, who illuminates what is hidden): (Draws a card — or three, for past month / threshold / month ahead — and interprets it for the coven. The torchlight falls on the card.)

IV. Guided Meditation — The Crossroads

(CM initiates chant very softly — barely audible — a subliminal drone under the HPS's voice. It should feel like hearing something far away, like waves, like wind.)

What follows is a guideline for the meditation, rather than ad libbing, which is preferable.

HPS (Einalia — the voice of the deep — leads the meditation): "Close your eyes. You are walking a road at night. The sky is moonless. You carry a lantern, but its light is thin. You come to a place where three roads meet. At the center stands a figure holding two torches. Her face shifts — maiden, mother, crone, and back again. She extends one hand. In it is a key. She says: What door are you afraid to open? ... (long pause) ... She says: What door are you afraid to close?... (long pause) ... She takes your bundle — everything you wrote, everything you swept — and places it at the crossroads behind her. She says: Walk forward. Do not look back. You walk. You walk until you see the first thin crescent of a new moon, low on the horizon. You are clean, fresh, ready. You are at the beginning. Open your eyes."

V. The Building of Hekate's Supper

(CM initiates chant— full, building — this is the climax of the ritual. The chant should reach its highest sustained energy here.)

HPS (Einalia — she who sets the table, she who speaks for the offerings from earth and sea): "Now we set the table for Hekate."

(HPS and HP, assisted by CM, ceremonially arrange the Deipnon offerings on the large platter. HPS places the Water and Earth offerings. HP places or consecrates the Fire and Air offerings.)

HPS (placing each item, naming it):

"Garlic — sacred to Hekate — sharp ward against what follows in the dark."
"Eggs, whole and unbroken — holding all potential in the shell of the unknown."
"Leeks and onions — the bite of honesty, the sting that cleanses."
"Fish from the sea of Einalia — food of the ancient dead."

HP (Dadoukhos — placing or consecrating with flame and breath):

"Honey cake — sweetness at the threshold, light in the mouth."
"Honey — golden, unrotting — an offering that does not decay." (passes the dish through the incense smoke)

HP (pouring the libation of wine into the chalice): "Red wine for Hekate and the restless dead. Phosphoros, may this libation shine in the dark places. For those who wander, those who long for peace, those who are not yet at rest."

(HPS places the vessel of sweepings and written releases beside the platter.)

HPS (Einalia — the final offering words): "Hekate Chthonia, Einalia, Ourania— of the Earth, Sea, and Sky — this is your supper. We offer it freely, as the ancients did at the crossroads before their doors. For you and for those in your train. May the hungry be fed. May the restless find peace. May the deep receive what we surrender."

All: "So mote it be!"

(CM sustains the chant through the anointing)

VI. Anointing

HPS/HP/CM anoints foreheads of those gathered with the triple moon symbol: "Proto Eos Mii, you are witness to the dawning of your own light. Blessed be."

(CM lets the chant fade)

Celebration of the Moon:

(Even on the dark moon, we celebrate — we celebrate the absence, the rest, the necessary darkness.)

HP or designated reader recites the Orphic Hymn to Hekate (Athanassakis translation):

"Hekate Einodia, Trioditis, lovely dame, of earthly, watery, and celestial frame, Sepulchral, in a saffron veil arrayed, pleased with dark ghosts that wander through the shade; Perseis, solitary goddess, hail! The world's key-bearer, never doomed to fail; in stags rejoicing, huntress, nightly seen, and drawn by bulls, unconquerable queen; Leader, Nymphe, nurse, on mountains wandering, hear the suppliants who with holy rites thy power revere, and to the herdsman with a favouring mind draw near."

(Additional chants, poems, songs, or dances may follow. Suggestions: a slow spiral dance widdershins; a group chant of "Hekate, Hekate, Hekate" in a deepening drone; or the Proclus Hymn to Hekate and Janus.)
