These popular artisan hand forged iron burins or candle scribes are one of Paul's most popular creations and many blacksmiths have been inspired by Paul’s Celtic, pagan and witchcraft designs for these unique tools for bloodletting or inscribing words and symbols into candles or wood.
Much quicker and safer and cleaner for pricking a finger or thumb near painlessly to let a bead of blood for spells and blood magick. Many also use them as mini wands or as scribes to etch into candles for candle magick.
The tip is needle sharp and the iron lends a pleasing weight, just like a pencil or pen it is much easier to wield than an athame or dagger.
Rams Horn burins are the shortest at approx. 5 inches in length. The other types (Stang, horned god, spiral, Celtic hook, Celtic stang etc) are 5.5 to 6 inches long.
Paul uses different ancient techniques to make these witchcraft ritual tools pop! With some he forge plates the artisan forged end of the burin with brass. Brass melts at a much lower temperature than iron, if the iron is just the right temperature, brushing the hot iron with a brass brush causes the brass to melt onto the iron, plating it.
Some are colorized with tempering colors, also known as “blueing”… But reds, golds, purples and blues can be achieved! A gorgeous iridescent effect! The colors are a hard patina that forms when hardening the steel at over 450 degrees!
Others are polished to a mirror finish to resemble silver and the moon!
The twists talk to the nature of magick, ever changing, suggesting movement and energy. The contrast between the light and dark also talk to the dual nature of magick and the power of dualities.

The Tubal Cain mythos also has iron as a tool of our will and apostasy, Yahweh after the expulsion from Eden told Adam and Eve they would have to scrabble among the thorns for their food... But Tubal Cain, 7th son of Cain had other ideas and discovered the working of iron and became the first blacksmith. To the Tubal Cain currents of witchcraft iron is therefore a tool of our will.
